Zoe’s small business journey: turning ideas into reality

Mid shot of Zoe sitting on an orange sofa, smiling at the camera and holding a sunflower decorative item. The text next to her is: "Self-Employment Assistance – Meet Zoe – helping small business owners turn their ideas into reality."

Zoe is redefining how to make an impact through passion and sustainability.

Balancing work, raising young children and being neurodivergent was challenging for Zoe. The type of flexibility she needed wasn’t always available, so she decided to create her own.

With the support of Workforce Australia Self-Employment Assistance, Zoe turned her passion for sustainability into Bloom Cycle – a Brisbane based small business that transforms waste into handcrafted eco-friendly trophies, art, and jewellery.

“Bloom Cycle allows me to work in a way that suits my strengths while making a meaningful impact,” said Zoe. “I also saw a huge sustainability gap in the awards industry. Traditional trophies are often mass-produced from non-recyclable materials, so I wanted to offer a handcrafted, eco-friendly alternative that turns waste into beauty.”

Support to grow

Through Self-Employment Assistance, delivered by Australian School of Employment, Zoe received mentorship, networking opportunities and business training.

“The program helped me refine my strategy and build a strong foundation,” said Zoe. “It gave me the confidence to turn my passion project into a fully-fledged business by learning about marketing, finance, and customer engagement.”

Zoe also found the support network invaluable.

“Being surrounded by like-minded entrepreneurs, learning from mentors, and having access to business resources has been game changing. It’s reassuring to know there’s a community cheering you on.”

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs

Zoe encourages anyone thinking of starting a business to “go for it!”

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help”, she said. “Mentorship, networking, and learning from others' experiences can make all the difference. And always stay true to your values— sustainability and ethical business practices have been my guiding principles”.

What’s next?

Zoe is continuing to grow Bloom Cycle while further developing her skills. She has completed Business Plan Development and is now undertaking Small Business Coaching, Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business and Accredited Small Business Training.

Zoe’s story is a great example of how Self-Employment Assistance can help turn a business idea into reality. If you’re thinking about starting or growing your own business, the program could help you too.
