On 19 October 2023 amendments to the VET Student Loans Rules 2016 (VSL Rules) commenced. Those amendments followed consultations with VSL providers and VET sector representative organisations about ways to improve the operation of the VSL Program.

In November and December 2022 the department consulted on proposed improvements to the VSL program and a possible future approach to academic suitability in the VSL program.

New legislation commenced on 1 January 2019 allowing the removal of VET FEE-HELP debt incurred because of inappropriate conduct by a VET FEE-HELP provider or their agent.

The VSL Determination was developed in consultation with State and Territory Governments and the VET sector, in the lead up to the commencement of the VSL program. During this process, the Australian Government agreed to include specific courses for listed and not-for-profit providers as eligible for VSL.
