The position of the Age Discrimination Commissioner is to address “barriers to equality and participation caused by age discrimination” and to ensure all Australians are protected from discrimination based on age in employment and education (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2024).
Commissioner Fitzgerald brings a wealth of experience, previously holding the position as the NSW Ageing and Disability Commissioner, as an Australian Productivity Commissioner, NSW Community and Disability Services Commissioner, and Deputy Ombudsman.
“I am honoured to continue the more than a decade’s work of my predecessors, the Hon Dr Kay Patterson AO and the late Hon Susan Ryan AO, and further address the delicate and intersecting needs of our ageing population” Commissioner Fitzgerald said in the news story published by the Australian Human Rights Commission.
We look forward to highlighting the work of Commissioner Fitzgerald and supporting the employment of mature age individuals.
Mature age workers help foster productive and competitive labour markets, contributing a positive influence across workplaces.
The department’s Mature Age Hub hosts information and links for businesses and mature age individuals who are looking for a job, to upskill or a new career. It also provides the latest research on mature age employment to support businesses hire and retain mature age individuals.
Commissioner Fitzgerald’s appointment is an excellent reminder of the valuable contribution mature age workers make to the Australian workforce.
