At the Jobs and Skills Summit in September 2022, the Government announced a Digital and Tech Skills Compact with employers, unions and others to work together to meet the goal of reaching 1.2 million tech related jobs. The Digital and Tech Skills Working Group was established as a practical mechanism to take forward the Compact.
The Digital and Tech Skills Working Group was tasked with considering the design of an 'earn while you learn' scheme to support workers entering the tech industry. This involved looking at how a model scheme can support workers to take on entry level tech roles through a blend of employment and formal training, including how such models could increase diversity in the tech-related workforce.
The Digital and Tech Skills Working Group's Final Report provides advice to Government about an 'earn while you learn' model. It shows such models will be an important part of broader digital and tech skills development efforts to support Australia's technological advancement.
The industry-owned and led Future Skills Organisation Jobs and Skills Council is now taking forward work to implement the report's findings starting with a review of existing 'earn while you learn' pathways, with an intent to progress broader activities to increase the uptake and success of digital training.
