Merridy’s story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of self-employment.

With the support of Workforce Australia Self-Employment Assistance Employment Assistance Provider, Auctus, Merridy not only established her dog treat business, but was able to overcome personal challenges related to her disability.

“Self-Employment Assistance helped me with my disabilities! I have always been an introvert and did not like to go out but starting this business has made me so passionate that I am at the markets every weekend with Thor (my assistance dog), selling my products,” said Merridy.

Merridy started her self-employment journey five years ago when her rescue dog Narla was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. The vet, at the time, gave her only three months to live. Refusing and determined to not let this happen, Merridy began extensive research into natural remedies and therapies for pain and inflammation.

Five years later, Narla is still with Merridy and is her continued source of inspiration.

“The staff at Auctus are all very proud of Merridy and what she has achieved during her time in the Self-Employment Assistance Program. Merridy experienced many business challenges along the way, but thanks to her determination and ‘can do’ attitude, she persevered and reached new levels of success!” said Merridy's Small Business Coach.

Narla’s Dogilicious Treats and Gifts was established to help Narla with her ailments, but it has grown to provide healthy treat alternatives and gifts for many dogs in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia.

Starting at local markets, Narla’s Dogilicious Treats and Gifts can now be found in dog-friendly hotels across the northern suburbs of Adelaide including the Prince Albert Hotel.

Having built up her business, Merridy is focused on her marketing strategies and has completed a number of business support activities including Small Business Training with a Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business (30220), Small Business Coaching and Business Health Checks.
