Impact investing is a developing field of practice that focuses on investment opportunities that intentionally seek some measure of both social impact as well as financial return. Impact investments promote collaboration across public, private and community sectors, and offer a way of mobilising both financial and non-financial resources for the purpose of creating positive social change.

Impact investments come in a variety of forms and are being used to support a range of social and environmental initiatives. Examples in Australia include the Social Enterprise Development and Investment FundsGoodstart Early LearningCommunity Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Pilot Project and the NSW Government Social Benefit Bond Pilot.
