An independent review is underway into the Federal Safety Commissioner. The Review aims to evaluate the Commissioner’s effectiveness and examine the merits of adopting a similar approach in other areas of Government procurement.

Experienced WHS consultant, Ms Marie Boland, has been appointed to lead the Review. Ms Boland has extensive experience having spent more than 10 years in the Senior Executive of SafeWork South Australia, including 2 years as its Executive Director. Ms Boland also led the National Review of the Model WHS Laws in 2018.
As part of the Review, formal consultations with stakeholders occurred from May 2023 and a public Discussion Paper guided consultations in July 2023. Submissions to the Discussion Paper and responses to a short survey were open throughout July. Public consultations ceased on 7 August 2023. A Consultation Summary is available reflecting the issues raised by stakeholders in consultations, submissions, and survey responses. A final report with recommendations to Government will be finalised by December 2023.
The Federal Safety Commissioner was established in 2005 to improve the safety culture of the building and construction industry. The Commissioner is responsible for enhancing and monitoring safety in the industry through the development, administration and promotion of the WHS Accreditation Scheme.
The Review is an opportunity for stakeholders to have their say on the Federal Safety Commissioner, the WHS Accreditation Scheme, and identify areas where improvements could be made.
