National Manufacturing Workforce forum speech

Dr Iain Ross, co-reviewer of the Strategic Review of the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System gave a speech at the 2024 National Manufacturing Workforce Forum on 16 April 2024.

There were three key things Dr Ross outlined in his speech:

  • Challenges facing the apprenticeship system and the work we are doing in the Strategic Review
  • Solving the current and future skills gap in manufacturing
  • Why apprenticeships are so essential to the future of the manufacturing industry as well as Australia.

“We are not going to solve the skills shortages by ignoring half the population. “We need to focus on women without making them the focus of the problem. One way of doing this is to improve the workplace experience for apprentices”.

“Reaching the Australian Governments net-zero emissions target by 2050 will require a transformation of the workforce.”

The Hon Brendan O'Connor MP attended the forum earlier in the day. His speech talked about facing with the most significant skills crisis in half a century while our economy undergoes the most rapid transformation in history.
