The Illawarra Heavy Industry Manufacturing Centre of Excellence will deliver targeted training to support a national transition to clean energy.
The Illawarra Heavy Industry Manufacturing Centre of Excellence will focus on traditional and renewable manufacturing at TAFE NSW's Wollongong Campus, and will be a key player supporting development of a skilled workforce capable of meeting the emergence of new technologies and the rise of automation.
The Illawarra Heavy Industry Manufacturing Centre of Excellence will:
- provide targeted training in traditional and renewable heavy industry manufacturing for the defence and transport sectors
- integrate emerging technologies and automation into training, equipping students for work in digital, electrical and robotic manufacturing, and
- deliver microskills and microcredentials to upskill current workers.
The Australian Government is investing in TAFE Centres of Excellence as part of the National Skills Agreement. It is supporting ongoing investments from the Australian and NSW governments to improve our manufacturing sovereign capability and transition to renewable energy processes.
It is the eighth TAFE Centre of Excellence to be established under the National Skills Agreement.
Background information
TAFE Centres of Excellence will increase collaboration between TAFEs, through partnerships with employers, unions, universities, Jobs and Skills Councils and other stakeholders. They will deliver the skills people need for good secure work and careers.
The Australian Government is investing $325 million under the 5-year National Skills Agreement to establish a network of up to 20 TAFE Centres of Excellence.
Each TAFE Centre of Excellence will focus on high skills needs to help deliver a skilled workforce for strategically important industries.
