Trade qualifications help Nathan reach new heights

National Skills Agreement – VET pathways – Meet Nathan – Electric Transport

VET helped Nathan in the automotive sector and now as an electric transport specialist.

The Australian Government has invested more than ever in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. Australians now have improved opportunities to advance their career in high demand skill sectors, just like Nathan did.

VET qualifications a springboard to senior UK roles

Nathan Gore-Brown’s career has seen him take on senior roles at luxury car brands and now as an electric transport specialist in his own business.

“Shortly after completing a Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology, and Certificate IVs in Engine Management – Petrol and Diesel, I was a fortunate Big Brother Movement (BBM) Scholarship recipient, enabling me to go to the UK for work experience,” said Nathan.

“Within three weeks of being there I had secured a position with a well-known luxury car brand and flew back to Australia to pack up.”

As an Electrical Engineer, it was mandatory for Nathan to have a university degree. He successfully applied to study a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering.

“A real bonus was that my three TAFE qualifications reduced the degree timeframe by about 50 per cent, so I could complete my degree within two years.”

The theoretical and practical structure of Nathan’s TAFE apprenticeship was a good segway into university studies, which saw him attending university half a day a week, working on research, design and development projects at his workplace.

“I enjoyed being on the pointy end of the automotive sector for three years,” said Nathan. “I was passionate about the tech and buzz of the market.”

Homeward bound and the transition to EVs

Not long after Nathan moved back to Australia he had an epiphany that electric vehicles (EVs) are the way of the future and joined a leading EV manufacturer. For the last 8 years Nathan has been an EV specialist and now runs his own electric transport consultancy business.

“During my career I have lent on my trade over and over, and still am,” said Nathan.

Nathan is now one of a few people in Australia who has sold, bought, implemented, designed and researched policy for electric vehicles and most recently curated a first electric refrigerated truck.

The Australian Government’s investment in the VET system through the National Skills Agreement is supporting more Australians to achieve success like Nathan’s and providing skills for Australia’s future.
