Utilising soft skills training to enhance work readiness

This report outlines key findings from a successful trial aimed at improving the soft skills of job seekers through the use of behavioural economics.

The trial was a partnership between the Department of Education, Skills and Employment and Bounce Australia and tested an intensive training intervention to improve soft skills. The trial ran from February 2019 to December 2019.

The training intervention was informed by key behavioural economics principles and was evaluated using a randomised control methodology. The intervention focused on:

  • using behavioural economics to encourage participation, reduce the friction of attending the training and reframing negative thoughts
  • information sessions provided pre-course information to job seekers about the benefits of the training
  • techniques used in the training to encourage behaviour change came from a range of disciplines, including positive psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy and other social science models.
