Career Care – attracting and retaining women in frontline disability care

Multicap Limited are a care provider offering specialised and complex support services to people living with high needs disabilities across Queensland and parts of Northern New South Wales.

Multicap has been impacted by a range of factors experienced throughout the care sector, such as labour shortages and the COVID-19 pandemic. By participating in the Workforce Australia - Career Revive program, Multicap sought to:

  • improve support provided to current staff, and
  • explore new ways to attract and recruit returners.

Multicap anticipate Career Revive actions will help by:

  • creating flexible pathways for carers in and out of the industry
  • proactively target returners through recruitment activities, and
  • enhance support for working parents, with a dedicated focus on flexible work and policy uplift.

Multicap has implemented a returner program with six returners participating in various roles across the organisation. The returners include two employees returning from maternity leave and two new women who were attracted to Multicap’s flexible working arrangements and facilities offered. One returner has been offered a new permanent opportunity to work from home and use her skillset to provide after-hours support to the frontline Support Workers through the On-Call team.

Some recent changes Multicap have implemented as part of their returner program include:

  • establishing discrete and comfortable facilities in two of their main offices which allow returning mothers to express milk in a private area
  • restructuring roles for a number of people returning from parental leave to improve flexibility and role satisfaction.

Multicap have also partnered with Women in Technology and are committed to sponsoring membership for females who work for them in the IT space. Currently they are sponsoring a female operational leader to help her continue advancing in her career. They are looking to expand sponsorship through their employee value proposition and their returner program.
